Notes - - According to the 1860 Houston County, Georgia, Michael could not read or write at that time.
- Michael moved from Houston to Washington County between 1860 - 6 May 1862 (when he was fighting in the Civil War). Stories of the family tell that Michael left Houston County because he knew about a murder and a rich landowner paid him to leave. [Photocopy, in my possession, of a page from Union Baptist Church in Washington County.]
- During the Civil War, Michael fought with the Bartow Unit of the 54th Georgia Infantry, Company C (Confederate States of America). He claimed his residence as Emanuel County. He lost him arm in the Battle of Kennesaw. He said, "Hell, Fire, Damn!"
- As of 06 May 1862, Michael was a private in his regiment. A transcript of a muster roll read, "...Wounded in right arm, necessitating amputation, at Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia. 27 June 1864." Was known as "One Arm Mike."
