  • Notes
    • - From Ancestry Family Tree (classified as a Public Member Story), uploaded by gjpierson July 2008. (I'm reading "FMC" as Free Man of Color.)
"Annis Bowie, the only daughter of James Bowie, FMC and Chaney, worked the farm like her brothers and was considered a beautiful woman. I know little of Annis but I do know that she had two children prior to her marriage to Rezin Bowie Lincecum. There names were James and Malissa or Marcellia. The census enumerate her with both spellings.

Rezin, who was white, is the son of Hezikiah Lincecum. Hezikiah's parents were Miriam Bowie and Gideon Lincecum. What's ironic is, Miriam Bowie was the Aunt of Rhesa Bowie, who I thought was a possible father candidate to James Bowie, FMC. However, after taking my Ancestry DNA test, I now believe Mariam may be the mother of James Bowie, FMC. I have been matched with 95% confidence to a direct female descendant of Mariam Bowie Lincecum. This surprised me since I had never considered the fact that instead of a male Bowie it could have been a female bowie who produced James, fmc. But back to Annis.

Through the marriage of Annis and Rezin they produced a large family. With Annis being mulatto and Rezin being white, some of their children were identified as white and some were identified as mulatto. Having said this, some of the childen married white, latin, Indian and black. With this some of her descendants have blended to be completely white and some have become black. Very unique situation, but I'm sure the DNA would show they had both."

      - In the 1850 Catahoula Parish, Louisiana Federal Census, there is listed a "Ennis Bowie", female, age 27. She has 4 children: James (12), Matthew (10), Marcilla (2), and Sarah (6). All are black and were born in Louisiana.

      - Listed as "Anna Linceycum" (mulatto) for the 1880 Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana Federal census.
