      - "Tragedy claimed the lives of the Taylor family on the night of September 6, 1882. Their home was situated between two forks of Onion Creek. During a torrential rain, the story is told that the father, Ben, rolled over in bed and was startled awake when his arm landed in water. Ben leaped out of bed, realizing the creeks were rising and flooding his home...The flash flood roared through the forks and washed away the house and occupants. The two eldest boys, however, managed to grab onto treetops and perched in the branches all night as the floodwaters raged below. The next day, the Taylors' neighbor Jacob Frank Roberts spotted the two boys in the trees from a nearby hilltop..." J. F. Roberts, known throughout Hays and adjoining counties as Jake Roberts, died at the home of his daughter in San Antonio last Sunday, and the body was brought back to his old home at Dripping Springs where it was tenderly laid to rest mid a mound of beautiful flowers brought as a token of love and respect. Rev. J. C. Dodgen, a Baptist minister and long-time friend, conducted the service.

Mr. Roberts was born in Mississippi Oct. 23, 1835. He came to Texas with his parents in 1843. They first lived in Caldwell County. When he had grown up to manhood he was married to Miss Beatrice Lincoln. They lived for a number of years at Round Mountain in Blanco County after which they moved to Dripping Springs, Hays County, where he lived until he lost his companion. He then lived with his children until his death, making his home a part of the time with his daughter, Mrs. Maude Jones, in San Marcos. He leaves seven daughters as follows: Mrs. Cannon, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Hendricks, and Mrs. Chatman of San Antonio, Mrs. Wallace of Llano, Mrs. Rowe of Dripping Springs and Mrs. Maude Jones of San Marcos.

Captain Roberts, of Liano, for many years with the Ranger service, is his brother and was present at the funeral.

Brother Roberts was held in the highest esteem by those who knew him as a citizen and a Christian. His membership was with the Christian Church. I had known Brother Roberts for more than 30 years and owing to our personal friendship, it was his request that I should conduct his funeral service at his death. May the blessings of heaven be upon his loved ones.
      J. C. Dodgen
