    • - On 7 July 1808, John was appointed by the Governor as a surgeon to Capt. B. M. Perrie's military company, extra battalion, "Montgomery Guards."

      - According to "The Bowies and Their Kindred", John, in 1810, was outstanding in his efforts to organize the planters, and at a meeting held at the Union Hotel in Georgetown, D.C., he assisted in forming "The Columbia Society for the Promotion of Agriculture."

      - John participated in the War of 1812.
