Notes - - According to "The Bowies and Their Kindred," James received a tract of land from his father called "Craycroft's Right," adjoining Mount Calvert Manor, in 1737... In his will, he referred to himself as being "in a low and languid state." Left his land to his eldest daughter, and personal property to his 2 younger daughters. Requested his brother Thomas to act as guardian for his orphan children. This was the first Bowie will ever recorded in Maryland.
- From Maryland Calendar of Wills, 1732-1738:
"Bowie, James, Prince George's Co., 28th Sept., 1744 [date of death].
To dau. Lucy and hrs. [heirs], 235 a[cres] dwell. plan. "Craycrofts Right" and 1/4 personal estate.
To daus. Martha and Elinor, residue of personal estate including money in Gt. Britain.
Ex.: bro. Thomas.
Test: Richard Keene, John Bowie, Mary Bowie."
- - I'm confident the witnesses to James's will were his parents, John and Mary Bowie.
