Notes - - Mrs. Walker, LJC Registrar, Dies At Age 64
Mrs. Jewel Tilley Walker, Laredo Junior College registrar and longtime teacher and administrator in area schools, died Monday morning at Mercy Hospital. Services are pending at Jakson's Funeral Home. Mrs. Walker, 64, was born in Cotulla. She held both bachelor and master's degrees from Texas A&I University. Her Career began in the days of the one-room schools which formerly were common in the area's ranch villages. She taught first in the little Zapata County town of Escobas, which no longer has a school. She also taught several years in Randado and Oilton. From 1944 to 1948 Mrs. Walker was superintendent of Zapata County schools...
Laredo College Official Dies
Laredo (Sp) - Mrs. Pleas Walker, 64, registrar at Laredo Junior College and former area school administrator died at 9 a. m. Monday in a local hospital after a short illness. Mrs. Walker was born in Cotulla and had lived here 22 years. She taught in Escobas, Randado and Oilton and served as superintendent of the Zapata Independent School District. She came to Laredo in 1948 and served as principal of Nye Elementary School and as a Webb County school supervisor before joining the college faculty in 1953. Mrs. Walker was an English
instructor and was promoted to counselor and assistant regisrar in 1958. A graduate of Texas A&I College and the University of Texas, she was appointed college regisrar in 1968. She was active in state professional organizations and local civic and social women's groups. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the First Christian Church. Burial will be in the City Cemetery under the direction of Jackson Funeral Home. Survivors include her husband (Pleas William Walker); a daughter, Miss Judy Walker of Laredo, and three sisters, Mrs. Francis A. Sponseller of Alice, and Mrs. C. K. Horton and Mrs. Carmen Pierce, both of San Antonio.
