Notes - - Per Grandma's notes: "She [Granny] lost her mother when she was nine years old. Then she learned to do most of the cooking & house work for her father & brothers. I heard her say she had to quit school in the third grade.
...She was a good cook and alway [sic] in a good mood, and had some thing for us when we got home from school. We would go pick up sacks of green walnuts and bring them home. Take the green outer shell off and let them dry for a few days and then she would sit up at night and crack them out by lamp light and take them to town to sell. She would have an old iron in her lap & would use a hammer on the nut to crack it. We sold them by the quart for 75 cents.
She walk [sic] to town which was about 5 miles away & worked in a sewing room & then walked home. Sometime she would get a ride. She also did washing for other people's clothes...& ironing."
Grandma wrote that Granny made the best pecan swirl cookies, biscuits, corn bread, cinnamon rolls, and pie crust.
Furthermore, Grandma said Granny was not very demonstrative: "I don't remember my mother ever hugging or kissing any of us, and it is still hard for me to share things." [Grandmother's Memories to Her Grandchild, 2002]
- According to the 1930 Douglas County, Missouri Federal Census, Cora owned her home on a farm.
- In April 1965, Cora was living with Virgil Prine, her son, in Pekin, Illinois. (I have a letter Mom wrote to Granny.)
- Granny died at 8:15 pm, Friday, 12 April 1974. She was 86 years, 3 months, and 27 days old. Her funeral was taken care of by Clinkingbeard Funeral Home of Ava, Missouri. Reverands Tom Johnson and John Campbell officiated. Pallbearers were Curtis Evans, Colman Gentry, Martin Kellogg, Gilly Buchanan, Clarence Singleton, and Berma Clinkingbeard. Funeral services were held in Clinkingbeard Chapel.
